How to pick the right size dumpster
1. Consider the Type of Project
Start by thinking about what you’re doing:
- Small home cleanouts or single-room remodels → A 10 yard dumpster is usually sufficient.
- Whole-home decluttering, flooring removal, or multi-room updates → A 15 yard offers more flexibility.
- Full renovations, construction projects, or roofing jobs → A 20 yard provides the volume most contractors need.
- Concrete, brick, or masonry removal → Always choose a dedicated concrete dumpster to stay within safe hauling limits.
If you’re replacing a roof, tearing out drywall, or removing cabinetry, volume adds up quickly. When in doubt, sizing up can often prevent needing a second haul.
2. Think About Weight (Not Just Space)
Many customers focus on how much will fit — but weight is just as important.
Heavy materials can reach included weight before the dumpster looks full. This includes things like:
- Roofing shingles
- Concrete and brick
- Tile and mortar
- Dirt and stone
That’s why heavy debris may require smaller fill amounts or a specific container type.
If your project involves dense materials, let us know. We’ll recommend the safest and most cost-effective option.
3. Evaluate Driveway & Placement Space
All of our dumpsters are driveway-friendly, but space still matters. Ask yourself:
- Do I have a flat, level area for placement?
- Is there vertical clearance (no low wires or branches)?
- Will the container block garage access?
4. Avoid Underestimating Your Debris
A common mistake is choosing too small of a dumpster to save money — only to need a second haul. That usually costs more than selecting the correct size upfront.
If your project is close to the upper limit of a size, moving up one option often provides better value and fewer delays.
5. Still Not Sure? Ask.
- What type of project you’re doing
- The approximate square footage
- The materials involved
- Whether it’s a full tear-out or partial removal
We’ll help you choose the right size so your cleanup runs smoothly, stays within weight limits, and avoids unexpected fees.

ROOFING GUIDANCE
Roofing specifics
Shingles are one of the heaviest materials we haul. Use the estimates below as a general guideline when choosing a dumpster size.

Note: These weight estimates are for shingles only (no plywood, underlayment, or other debris). The maximum square amounts listed below will exceed the standard weight allowance included with your rental, so additional weight charges should be expected.
10 yard
- Max 20 sq 3-tab (single layer) — approx. 2.5 tons
- Max 15 sq architectural — approx. 2.6 tons
15 yard
- Max 25 sq 3-tab (single layer) — approx. 4.4 tons
- Max 20 sq architectural — approx. 3.5 tons
20 yard
- Max 30 sq 3-tab (single layer) — approx. 3.75 tons
- Max 25 sq architectural — approx. 4.38 tons
Tip
Architectural shingles and multiple layers can go past included weight fast—even when the dumpster isn’t full by volume.
*Shingle weight varies by manufacturer, age, and number of existing layers. The estimates above are general guidelines only.*
If your project includes:
- Multiple shingle layers
- Sheathing (plywood or OSB)
- Ice & water shield
- Flashing or additional debris
Please let us know in advance so we can recommend the safest and most cost-effective option.

Dumpster size FAQs
Quick answers to help you choose the right dumpster rental.
What fits in a 10 yard dumpster?
Small cleanouts, garage decluttering, yard debris, and minor bathroom/kitchen updates. It’s a great choice when space is tight. Check out our guide on What fits in a 10 yard dumpster.
When should I choose a 15 yard dumpster?
For medium cleanouts, flooring removal, small deck tear-outs, and light renovation debris—more room than a 10 without the larger footprint of a 20.
Is a 20 yard dumpster big enough for renovations?
Often, yes. It’s a popular option for remodels, roofing projects, and construction debris. If you’re unsure, we can recommend a size based on your scope.
Can I put concrete in any dumpster?
If you have a mix of concrete and other waste, contact us to let us help you pick the best dumpster for your project. If it is only heavy material, you will likely want to use our concrete dumpster.
