If your dumpster will be placed on a public street, sidewalk, or any portion of the public right-of-way, the City of Ann Arbor typically requires a Barricade Permit before the dumpster is delivered.

According to the City of Ann Arbor, Barricade Permits are required whenever a portion of the public right-of-way is occupied, including temporary placement of dumpsters and storage containers.

When applying, you may be asked to provide:

• The location where the dumpster will be placed

• The size of the dumpster

• The dates the dumpster will occupy the area

• Information about the portion of the street or sidewalk being used

The City also notes that if the placement requires a traffic lane closure, additional traffic control permits may be required. In some cases, proof of liability insurance naming the City of Ann Arbor as an additional insured may also be necessary.

Because permit requirements can change, we recommend reviewing the City’s current permit requirements before scheduling delivery if your dumpster will be placed anywhere other than private property.

For most homeowners, placing the dumpster in a driveway is the easiest option and typically does not require a permit.
